Traveling Photovoice Exhibition

Funded by the American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC), the Tskaltubo Photovoice Project (პროექტი ფოტო-ხმა წყალტუბოდან) studied the emotional impact of housing infrastructure conditions on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Abkhazia. It asked how infrastructural disrepair impacts identity, personhood, dignity, agency, and sense of futurity. To answer this, we conducted a feminist visual ethnography focusing on IDPs from the 1992-1993 Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and their resettlement experiences. This research project included a photovoice component. We analyzed stories and photos taken by IDPs living in collective centers (CCs) located in the former Soviet spa resort of Tskaltubo in the Imereti region of Western Georgia. Between July and October 2021, ten IDPs from several sanatorium buildings in Tskaltubo visually captured infrastructure conditions with cameras as part of the research process. Each research participant in this study has been assigned a pseudonym, which are identified on the photos. Photo titles were chosen by each photovoice participant. The emotional and intimate effects of poor infrastructural conditions were powerfully shown in IDPs’ photos, which are we currently showing as part of a traveling exhibition. Below is our exhibition brochure, exhibition request form, information about our research team, and a list of previous events.
